burning down the ... um, office

Something in my room is burning or melting down. Smelly burnt-electronics stench fills the office. This is making me nervous, because I can't identify what's self-destructing.

Turned off some lights, but it's still smelly. Perhaps this is my monitor saying that it's about time to be replaced.

Check standing lamps. When the halogen torche lamps were popular I'd get a burning smell when a fly got roasted by the bulb. On the up side, it doubled as a bug zapper.

Hmmm... maybe, but I've replaced the bulbs with low-energy fluorescent ones.

Check for a moth fried in the coils of the bulb, I've gotten those several times.

I only use lamps in my office, not those horried overheads....

Hmmm. Don't burn down the office. Or at least get all your stuff out first.

That's my goal. I think it's time to do another big backup of my files, too....

This is like an serialized short story! I can hardly wait for the next episode in which our intrepid young academic discovers the source of the mystery aroma . . . hopefully, to be published here in a couple of days, rather than in the "exciting but scary local news" section of the paper.

Heeee. I'll try to keep the story from getting too interesting.
