Poor Spirit Rover.

This is one of the saddest cartoons I've ever read:

Brave little Spirit Rover, we appreciate all the amazing work you've done!

EDIT: I hope she gets a chance to update her LJ: spiritrover.

I never thought Spirit Rover's story would end this way. Were they going to bring it home - was that the plan?

If they don't want us to be sad about stuff like this, they need to stop giving them names.

No, it was a one-way mission. But apparently no one told her.

Because otherwise, like a right-thinking little rover, she would have refused to go!

...or would have bravely done her duty knowing that it would end with dust in the slow dying of the light.

This made me really sad, too. I wished there were another panel (or maybe the mouse-over text) that showed how proud of it the scientists were. Poor little lonely robot.

I know! That would change this from tragedy to bittersweet drama.

She's like the child we sent off on a grand adventure who excelled beyond our wildest dreams... but can't come home.

Grr. I like NASA's response on Twitter: "Why would we want to be anywhere but Mars?" She set out as an explorer, never expecting to return.

Yup, a brave little one-way explorer.
