In the comments on the LJ feed, people point out that's how we establish parallax to nearby stars.

Sure, that's why I think this would work! Using a couple of web-cams and a smart-phone is a clever innovation.

(Though it would require more than a couple hundred feet for decent parallax.)

I loved the detail on this cartoon, and the way he laid out the method....





and then I moused over it and saw the hidden punch line, or whatever it's called, and I LOLLED!

Me too! I always use xkcd during my tech-writing classes to show the fun one can have with the "title" attribute.
