Check out these movies of the Northern Lights (aka Aurora Borealis and Australis, depending on where you live on the globe). First up, a video time-lapse from a Norwegian neighborhood:

Another video time-lapse from across a city:

There are tons of great photos out there, too, such as this one of the Aurora Australis as seen FROM THE SPACE STATION. BY AN ASTRONAUT:

Just WOW! I miss living in a part of the world where one can observe these amazing space shows.

The most amazing Northern Lights I've ever seen were in Vorkuta as my mother and I lost our way and were freezing in the middle of the tundra. We almost died, but the view was awesome.

Wow, what a story! In the coldest and darkest places - places that are inhospitable to human life - that's where you'll enjoy the best astronomy.

It's as if you can see the magnetic forcefield protecting the Earth - gorgous and amazing!

Sorry you're having crappy weather for it.

Hooray for the first night! That's great - when I lived in Seattle, I never got a chance to see any aurora. Should have camped on a mountaintop... though my one overnight on Table Mountain during a star party got rained out.

Oh how I wish! Far too much light pollution here in Long Beach, and certainly too far south. I've been to Anchorage twice in January, but both times the sky was cloudy every night.
