thanks for voting!

Thanks to everyone for voting in the "Astro-image of the day" poll from yesterday. Results are 24:5 for not putting the images behind an LJ-cut, so they'll remain visible as they've been so far. Also, a slight majority preferred bigger versions of the images. However, because some people's LJs cannot support image widths over 500 pixels and in defernce to the five who would rather not see these images in their LJ friends list, I'll not be upping the image size to 600, instead leaving them at 500 with links as before to the original page(s) that usually contain much larger versions if people choose to view those.

So, after all that, I'll not be changing my AIotD posts at all! Hm. There you go: Sometimes a poll just verifies that you're doing the right thing.

Thanks again!

Speed Racer returns in 2008!

For many of us, Speed Racer was a childhood icon. I could not tell you the plot of a single episode except that he raced a lot, but who can forget that epitome of race-car design, the Mach 5? It exudes sex appeal and speed and is the epitome of 1950s sports-racer design combined with 1960s wildness and movie-car exuberance. For many of us, this is how a race car should look:

Here's the official website, oddly devoid of trailers (click the image to see trailers). The Wachowski Brothers (!) are behing this one, due out in May. No, I am not expecting a quality movie (if you watch the trailer, you'll understand); I am, however, very much looking forward to watching those sexy cars race across the big screen!

Thanks to darkyak for the tip.

BRRRRR!

So last night, some jokers decided it would be funny to turn off the power to large parts of Lawrence. Just in time for the night after our first big winter storm. Hooray and all that.

One of my favorite things about losing power is that my fire alarms - cleverly wired into the household power supply (what kind of idiot designer thinks that's a good idea?) - beep for minutes after the power outage. The power briefly came back on at about midnight, just long enough to recharge the batteries on the fire alarms, then shut down again, making the beeping resume. Ah, joy. I was trying to sleep, what with not going out due to the hazardous condition of the roads, so this was the best of all worlds. Yay!

Oh, and did I mention that I was right in the middle of the fine film, "They Came From Beyond Space," based on Joseph Millard's book, The Gods Hate Kansas? Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
