kill the penny!

Okay, so I admit to having collected coins in my life and I still have most of them (those that my little brother didn't steal, then use to buy candy, when we were kids). But with the highest-ever cost of copper right now, it's time to kill the penny, isn't it?

What do you think?

As long as tax is added at the till, and not on the label (as in all other countries to my knowledge), the US will need pennies.

It's easy enough to round up/down by a few cents! Or local governments could require businesses to price items so they come out to the nearest nickel... better yet, to the nearest dollar.

Or we could go all-electronic, per Everflame's idea below:

I personally can't wait for all physical money to cease to exist. I realize the economic implications of such a thing would be devastating to most of the people in the world, so it's impractical and self-defeating. But I hate real money. It's bulkly. All I need are my credit and debit cards. And *maybe* checks. Thank you very much.

I'm with ya! I only use cash when it's a pain to use credit card (I get 1% back at the end of the year), such as buying (say) an engine or car on eBay and having to pay cash in person for it.

Kill the penney!
Yah, just line them all up on the railroad track and squish em!

Re: Kill the penney!
Perfect! Better yet, as Scarlettina would enjoy, squishing them with artistic imprints.

'Strue, but there's still copper plating and a metal core... and research shows that they cost more than a penny to create, all costs considered. Plus they're a pain in the rumpus.

Honest Abe's immortal shine
No more pennies? What would the world be like?
The old rhyme of finding a penny and picking it up would be like Old-English, or American folklore(like Davy Crockett)... Obsolete, though interesting to history buffs.

There is that... and kids would no longer learn that "a penny saved is a penny earned." Perhaps (allowing for inflation) we could substitute "dollar" for "penny."

Someone needs to go back and watch The West Wing episode where Sam tackles this very issue. :)

I don't watch regular TV programming - what happens? (I assume Sam is the prez, right?) What does s/he do to fix the issue?

Sam was the deputy communications director (Rob Lowe). He had to handle a congresscritter's request to kill the penny, eventually bought into the idea, and had to be talked out of it by others on the staff.
