What a game! Rock Chalk Jayhawks! *g*

So I think this is only the second or third basketball game I've ever watched all the way through, and what a game to have watched!

KU was behind for most of it, though they pulled ahead a few times. At about three seconds left in the game, they were still three seconds behind. Memphis was predicted to beat us. All seemed lost. The KU player who ran the ball down to the net slipped and fell before he could get off a shot, tossing it to a team-mate who jumped from outside the 3-point line... and made the basket!

Memphis made a crazy attempt to shoot from center court, but the game ended regulation time tied. Mind you, the enemy player who seemed to be their best defensive dude had fouled out shortly before this. As you can imagine, what with that big last-second swing and with Memphis handicapped defensively, KU walked away and won the NCAA championship! This is only KU's third championship ever, and the last one was 20 years ago.

About six of us boozed it up while watching the game at starstraf's house - replete with a kitty to sit on one's lap - and when that last-second 3-pointer tied things up, the hootin' and hollerin' caused kitty to launch from my, um, groinal region with great force. Only the adrenaline kept me from falling to my knees.

One of the things that made me laugh is that none of us would consider ourselves big b-ball fans, yet we had a blast. Oh, and then we watched the downtown Lawrence celebration on the local TV channel. Apparently something on the order of 40,000 people poured onto Mass. St. after the game, and on my way home jamer_31 and I drove along a parallel street where we could witness the insanity ourselves. Wow. A sizable percentage of town was on that street celebrating.

Whatta night!

Irritatingly, however, KU canceled classes tomorrow. This means my Tech Writing class loses an entire week, and this was to be a critical class. Now the students will have to work through some pretty challenging things on their own to complete and launch their websites by next week. I hope they do well!

I'm irritated that they canceled classes today, too. We watched the downtown madness from our house. It would have been tempting to go join the throng about two kids ago.

I miss a good throng.

Re: at the end of the game...
Both! At three seconds left, they were three points behind. Then: Zoom! Tie! Game goes to overtime.

Every time I'd briefly sneak over to see the score, Memphis was owning KU, so mad props to your team for staying in it and taking it to OT (and winning). That's a championship attitude. So, congrats to all you crazy Jayhawks.

I hate basketball too, but I watched a little bit of the Hurricanes in round two when they played Texas. I apparently caught the only good 3 minutes of that game (the last 3, since I had just gotten home from the airport), and when I turned on the TV Miami was behind by 17, and got within 3. Oh well, not bad for a school that didn't even have a basketball program when I was a student there (I graduated in 86).

I am a bit anti-sports myself at times - and was greatly hindered by having to rule out much needed errand running downton Sat & yesterday (maybe it wouldn't have been the hassle during day that I suposed, but...)- but I admit to sneaking home and watching the end of the game and the crowds on Mass.
The rivalries all day at work spunked me up for it....
I had a lot this morning - and I got caught up in the woot, woot and could not quite wind down until a couple hours before I had planned to be awake. And, I am supposed to party into wee hours tonight ("required" afterparties for a banquet) and make it to work by 7:30 tomorrow morning.

Enjoy your day off as much as possible. They couldn't have done classes with the 45,000 people expected to show up to 3p.m. "reception" in stadium welcoming players home...

The highlights were on the news here. It sounded like a heck of a game. I wondered whether the excitement would overcome your concerns about sports interfering with academics. Sounds like it did, at least for one game. Congrats to your school's team.
